CO2 Performance Ladder
The CO2 Performance Ladder is a Dutch sustainability tool that supports both companies and governments in reducing CO2 emissions and costs. This happens at different levels: within operations, projects, and the entire chain. We would be happy to tell you more about the sustainability measures we have implemented using the CO2 Performance Ladder.
CO2 footprint
Text: Here we present Kempenaars’ carbon footprint for the calendar year 2022 and the first half of 2023, broken down by scope. The emission factors used for these calculations are from www.co2emissiefactoren.nl, accessed in October 2023.
The tables show the detailed carbon footprint for 2022 and the first half of 2023. For each emission stream, we specify the type of fuel or electricity, the unit, and the emission factor we use to calculate the CO2 emissions per stream. These calculations have been made in the Excel document ‘Kempenaars carbon footprint’, which also refers to the underlying sources.

Doelstellingen
Measures implemented in recent years
Many sustainability measures have been introduced in recent years. Below is a brief overview of the most important measures taken in recent years:
- Purchase of GOs to green electricity
- Installation of solar panels
- Optimisation of route planning
- Installation of waste press on containers at customers’ premises, allowing more waste in a container
- Smart containerisation at customers’ premises to avoid collection of containers that are not yet optimally filled
- Regular checks and maintenance of tyre pressure
- Installation of charging station at parking space
- Installation of LED lighting
Reduction targets for the 2024-2027 period
For the 2024-2027 period, the following objectives have been set:
- For scope 1: 10% CO2 reduction per tonne of waste processed in 2027 compared to 2022
- For scope 2 + business travel: 95% CO2 reduction by 2027 compared to 2022
Doelstellingen
Every three years, we develop a new action plan that sets out a series of measures to be taken over the coming period. This plan is partly based on the recommendations of the SKAO. It is important to emphasise that the list of actions below is not exhaustive. Additional measures may be added as a result of our annual review. Alternatively, some measures may be deemed no longer relevant.
The proposed measures fall into several categories, including: Offices, Business spaces & processes, Mobility for freight and passenger transport, and finally Communications and General Organisation.

Actions
Offices
Implementing up-to-date approved energy-saving measures for offices + Optimising climate systems
General Communication and Organisation
Publicising impact through communication channels
Mobility-passenger transport
Maintaining tyre pressure of passenger transport
Mobility-freight transport
Maintaining tyre pressure of passenger transport
Business spaces & processes
Investigating sustainability options for electrical installations. Including whether electric motors meet at least efficiency class IE3 or IE4
Chain initiatives
Participation in a sector or chain initiative is encouraged through the CO2 Performance Ladder. The organisation should be aware of industry initiatives and, on the other hand, actively participate in them.
Inventory chain initiatives
To stay well informed about relevant initiatives within the chain, we consulted the SKAO website and compiled a list of key chain initiatives. We then went through the list with the management team. We update and review this list on a yearly basis. Kempenaars Recycling actively participates in the chain initiative mentioned below.
Ongoing initiatives
Collaboration with Circular Plastics Alliance
Kempenaars Recycling BV is a member of the Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA). The objective of the CPA is to promote the circular economy for plastics. It aims to improve plastics recycling and increase the use of recycled plastics in products. The main activities and objectives of the Circular Plastics Alliance are:
- Encourage the design and production of plastic products that are 100% recyclable and can be reused in a closed loop.
- Reduce unnecessary use of plastic material by at least 40%. This is done through research and development and continuous innovation.
- Ensure improvement of current collection, sorting and recycling capacity per Alliance project.
- At least 30% recycled plastic in new packaging and production.
- Achieve this by setting up chain collaborations between approved companies.
Kempenaars Recycling contributes by paying a monthly membership fee and actively providing knowledge (meetings + knowledge exchange).
An actual pilot project has emerged from this alliance.
Are you ready to take control of your waste management? We would love to discuss the best solutions for you!
